Lawmakers dropped a plan to make women register for the draft, Military Times reported.

The controversial provision had been part of early drafts of the annual defense authorization bill, narrowly passing a House Armed Services Committee vote, followed by a Senate panel approval in June.

Conservatives in both chambers objected to the provision in the final draft unveiled Tuesday and stripped it out of the bill, Military Times reported. Instead, the legislation calls for a review of the Selective Service System to see if it is realistic and cost-effective.
