President Barack Obama has approved an increased role for U.S. forces in Afghanistan, Reuters reports.

Citing an unnamed senior defense official, Reuters reported that Obama has backed a plan to expand the U.S. military’s assistance of Afghan forces fighting the Taliban to provide more proactive support.

The official told Reuters the the move could allow greater use of U.S. air power, including close air support, but said, “This not a blanket order to target the Taliban.”
